“This country does not have an effective strategy for immunizing adults against infectious diseases,” Jeffrey Levi, executive director of Trust for Americas Health, said during a morning teleconference.

Seniors aren’t getting vital vaccinations, study finds

States require that children have all their immunizations before they can enroll in school. Veterinarians send reminder cards to pet owners when Fido or Tabby is due for a shot. No such safety net exists for adults, however, and especially for the elderly, who are particularly susceptible to many diseases that vaccines can prevent, according to a new report about the low rate of adult immunization.

Vaccine gives kids in Mali ’strong malaria protection’

A malaria vaccine tested by US and African researchers in Mali produced a robust immune response in young children, the group most vulnerable to the mosquito-borne disease, a report released Thursday showed.

The children were given one of three, progressively stronger doses of the vaccine or a control vaccine against rabies.

Experts say 40 percent of cancers could be prevented

Forty percent of the 12 million people diagnosed with cancer worldwide each year could avert the killer disease by protecting themselves against infections and changing their lifestyles, experts said Tuesday.

“If there was an announcement that somebody had discovered a cure for 40 percent of the worlds cancers, there would quite justifiably be huge jubilation,” UICC president David Hill told Reuters in a telephone interview.

Malaria cases likely half in third of countries

Malaria cases appear to have been slashed by half in more than a third of countries battling the disease following a renewed push by the United Nations to eradicate it, the World Health Organization said Tuesday.

Malaria infected more than 240 million people last year and killed an estimated 863,000 people, mostly in Africa.
