Study opens new path to fighting leukemia relapse

Researchers in Japan have identified 25 different spots on leukemia cells, each of which could be used to design a new drug to fight the disease.

“If we develop drugs against these molecules, we have a pretty good possibility of eliminating leukemia stem cells that cannot be killed by conventional anti-cancer drugs,” lead researcher Fumihiko Ishikawa at the RIKEN Research Center for Allergy & Immunology in Yokohama, Japan, said by telephone.

Lackluster cancer drug sales hit Roche profit

Roche Holding AG missed full-year profit forecasts due to disappointing sales of key cancer drugs and gave a Lackluster outlook for 2010, pointing up the wider challenges facing global drugmakers.

“Results clearly disappoint and 2010 guidance is no trigger for a positive sentiment either,” said Kepler Capital Markets analyst Martin Voegtli.

Herbal remedies, heart drugs don’t mix: review

Taking ginkgo biloba, St. Johns wort and other widely used herbal supplements may be risky for people on heart disease medication, especially the elderly, according to a medical review released on Monday.

Mixing herbs and drugs also could cause serious heart rhythm problems and bleeding, according to the review published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Hormone drugs for prostate cancer may hurt heart

Prostate cancer treatments that cut off the supply of male hormone raise cholesterol, worsen blood sugar and make men fatter and thus likely raise the risk of heart attack, too, doctors said on Monday.

The American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Urological Association and American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology joined forces to write the advisory.

Scientists find quicker way to study cancer drivers

British scientists have found a new and faster way of studying a crucial class of cancer cells, called cancer stem cells, which they say should speed up work on developing drugs against them.

“Working with cell lines is a much more convenient way to study these cells than using samples taken from human patients or using animal models,” said Walter Bodmer, who led the study.

First private pharmacy since 1971 opened in Sweden

Swedish Health and Social Affairs minister Goeran Haegglund inaugurated the countrys first private pharmacy since 1971 in front of reporters and a small crowd in Stockholm on Sunday.

The state-owned Apoteket chain of pharmacies was until Sunday the sole provider of prescription medication in Sweden, and was until November 2009 also the only provider of non-prescription drugs such as headache tablets or other over-the-counter products.
