For all the hue and cry over a government takeover of health care, it’s happening anyway.

That’s even if President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul wastes away in congressional limbo. Long in coming, the shift to a health care sector dominated by government is being speeded up by the deep economic recession and the aging of the Baby Boomers, millions of whom will soon start signing up for Medicare.

Three-Fourths of Cancer Patients Have Severe Flares of Pain

Breakthrough cancer pain is a major challenge for 75 percent of adult cancer patients, according to new survey findings released by the American Pain Foundation.

“Were not talking about minor aches and pain. These severe flares of pain often strike without warning, leaving many people fearful of the next crippling episode and unduly burdening patients and their families,” Will Rowe, chief executive officer of the American Pain Foundation, said in a news release from the foundation.

Increased patient cost-sharing may hurt elderly

The type of treatment received by prostate cancer patients is influenced by the kind of health care facility where they receive care, a new U.S. study has found.

In the study, Dr. J. Kellogg Parsons, of the Moores Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego and the VA Medical Center San Diego, along with colleagues at the University of California, Los Angeles, analyzed the care given to 559 prostate cancer patients enrolled in a state-funded program for low-income patients.

Report: UK drinking culture strains health system

Health care providers are rolling out a different sort of stocking stuffer: Gift cards that can be used to pay bills and insurance premiums or for specific services at eye doctors and dentist offices.

“The person can make the decision on where to use it. That is really the gift of it,” said Sue Allen, a spokeswoman for Holy Family Memorial Health Network, a Wisconsin hospital and clinic chain that sells gift cards.

US tops world in health care spending, results lag

The United States ranks near the bottom in life expectancy among wealthy nations despite spending more than double per person on health care than the industrialized world’s average, an economic group said Tuesday.

That’s a year less than the OECD average of 79.1, and puts the U.S. just ahead of the Czech Republic, Poland and Mexico, where spending on health care is many times less per person, the Paris-based organization said in its latest survey of health trends among its 30 rich member countries.
