New target for fighting Alzheimer’s: study

January 27, 2010 on 3:00 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments

French researchers said Tuesday they had found a promising new target in the fight against Alzheimers, the debilitating brain disease that causes irreversible memory loss and dementia.

The telltale symptoms of Alzheimers and other neurodegenerative diseases have been linked to an overabundance in the brain of the tau protein.

Frequent Mental Lapses May Precede Alzheimer’s

January 20, 2010 on 8:00 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments

Mental lapses among older adults occur more often among those developing Alzheimers disease than healthy elders, new research finds.

“For many years, people have jokingly attributed mental lapses, or incidents when the train of thought temporarily seems to jump its tracks, as senior moments,” said lead researcher Dr.

Loss of Smell Could Be Early Sign of Alzheimer’s

January 20, 2010 on 4:00 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments

New research in mice suggests that loss of smell could serve as an early indicator of Alzheimers disease.

The findings are reported in the Jan. 13 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

People with Alzheimers are already known to suffer from loss of smell. But the new research pinpoints a direct link between development of amyloid plaques — the bits of gunk in the brain that cause Alzheimers disease — and a worsening sense of smell.

People with a gene linked to long life and good health are also less likely to develop Alzheimers disease, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

“Weve known for a long time that genetic factors matter in Alzheimers disease,” said Dr. Richard Lipton of Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York, whose study appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Could Your Cell Phone Help Shield You From Alzheimer’s?

January 16, 2010 on 1:00 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments

Cell phone addicts of the world, listen up: Electromagnetic waves emanating from these ubiquitous gadgets may prevent or even reverse Alzheimers disease, researchers say.

The findings were actually the opposite of what the researchers were expecting.

Normal mice who had long-term exposure to such electromagnetic waves avoided developing Alzheimers, while mice who were already sick started getting better, scientists report in the Jan.

Cellphones may protect brain from Alzheimer’s

January 15, 2010 on 11:00 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments

A study in mice suggests using cellphones may help prevent some of the brain-wasting effects of Alzheimers disease, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday.

The results were a major surprise and open the possibility of developing a noninvasive, drug-free treatment for Alzheimers, said lead author Gary Arendash of the University of South Florida.

Mobile phones may halt, reverse Alzheimer’s: study

January 15, 2010 on 10:00 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments

Long suspected of causing brain tumors, mobile phones are now being eyed as key allies in the fight against Alzheimers disease, US researchers said in a study.

Older mice saw deposits of beta-amyloid — a protein fragment that accumulates in the brain of Alzheimers sufferers to form the diseases signature plaques — wiped out and their memories improved after long-term exposure to mobile phones, the study published in the Journal of Alzheimers Disease showed.

Alzheimer’s may guard against cancer and vice versa

January 11, 2010 on 6:00 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments

People with Alzheimers disease may be less apt to get cancer and people with cancer may be less apt to get Alzheimers disease, new research hints.

According to a report published today in the academys journal Neurology, Roe and her team studied 3,020 people aged 65 and older. These individuals were followed for an average of five years to see whether they developed dementia and an average of eight years to see whether they developed cancer.
